II Euromag Meeting

Dear Reader,

The II Euromag Meeting was successfully held at the University of Bologna Alma Mater Studiorum from June 8 to 10.

Following our first meeting in Paris, we maintained the tradition of having Euromag held in hystorical sites: we moved from Les Cordeliers, an hystorical cloister now home to University Pierre et Marie Curie, right in the heart of Quartier Latin, to the renaissance convent of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna, in the “Giorgio Prodi” hall decorated by a magnificent fresco by Bartolomeo Cesi, dated 1580.

We hosted 80 participants from several contries in Europe, but some came also from far eastern countries and USA. As announced, we had a panel of invited speakers that showed first rank experts from the international magnesium research community.

Of particular interest was the breaking news lecture “Human genetic analysis of a primary immunodeficiency involving magnesium transport”, given by Michael J Lenardo, from the Laboratory of Immunology at NIH, Bethesda MD.  Dr. Lenardo presented new data on the involvement of the magnesium transporter MagT1 in T-lymphocyte mediated response. The related paper just appeared in Nature.

We wish to thank all speakers and participants for contributing to the success of the Meeting and for creating such a friendly and stimulating atmosphere in the charming atmosphere of Bologna.
